The earliest written reference is in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament where it is referred as “ketzah” a spice for bread and cakes that can be used in many ways. Easton’s bible dictionary clarifies that the Hebrew word for black cumin, ketsah, refers to the nigella sativa. Isaiah compares the reaping of black cumin with wheat. “For the black cumin is not threshed with a threshing sledge, nor is a cart wheel rolled over the cumin, but the black cumin is beaten out with a stick, and the cumin with a rod.”(Isiah 28:25,27 NKJV).

It is also known to have been used by Cleopatra for its health and beauty giving qualities. Queen Nefertiti, praised for her exquisite complexion, was an avid user of black cumin seed oil. Physicians in Pharaohs’ times used black seed as a remedy for colds, headaches, digestive disorders, toothaches, infections, inflammatory disorders and allergies.

Used by all Naturopathic Masters

Hippocrates (5th century B.C.) regarded nigella sativa which he referred to as as a valuable remedy in hepatic and digestive disorders. In the first century it was used extensively by Pliny the elder in his “Naturalis Historia” (Natural History) who referred to it as “Git”.

His list of remedies include the treatment of snakebites and scorpion stings, calosites, old tumours, abscesses, and skin rashes. A series of remedies against colds and inflammations in the area of the head are recommended (which appeared almost unchanged in the large German medicinal plant encyclopedias of the 16th to 18th centuries).

A short time later it was used by the Greek physician Dioscoredes, who described the plant clearly under the name of melanthion in his 5-volume pharmacology “De Materia Medica” which was used as a reference for healing with herbs into the Middle Ages, he used black cumin seed to treat headaches, nasal congestion, toothache and intestinal parasites.

They were also used, he reported, as a diuretic to promote menstruation and increase milk production. Dioscoredes was to influence the homeopathic master’s of modern time.

Main functions of Black seeds (Nigella sativa)

Everyone of us know that the immune system has a direct and indirect effect on all bodily systems. Any disturbance in the immune system affects all the systems of the body. Also the soundness of this system and its enhancement would have a direct or indirect effect on all the systems of the body. When a human being is infected by any disease, the power of the immunity system affects the cure of this disease whether directly or indirectly. We proved through this research that the black seed enhances both the immunity system of the body and improves its functions.

The majority of our health problems have the same causes - infection by micro-organisms such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi. When using clinical (allopathic medicines) each symptom is treated individually and usually with synthetic, chemically manufactured medicines that contain alcohol and other harmful ingredients. Black seed is effective at treating the body as a whole and fights the actual cause of the symptoms. Black seed regulates too weak or too strong reactions of the immune system and is excellent for treating chronic, allergic and hormonal diseases. Black seed support metabolism, improve digestion, and lowers blood sugar levels. It is used to dispel worms and parasites from intestinal track. It is useful in soothing bronchitis and coughs, increase body tone, stimulates menstrual periods, increases the flow of breast milk, provides quick energy, increases sperm count, calms the nervous system, encourages hair growth and retards hair fall out, prevents skin wrinkling, and much more.

Nowadays our food is more and more denaturalized, our bodies are full of free radicals which produce cancer. The essential fatty acids in black seed bind the free radicals and eliminate them. Since our bodies are not able to synthesize thereby making Black seed an important addition to our diet. Black seed also contains beta carotene, which is known to destroy cell damaging substances which produce cancer.

FDA Approved Black Seed Oil

In 1996, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted a patent for drug use as an immune system stimulant. The drug is based on extracts of "Nigella Sativa," more commonly known as the black seed to Muslims or black cumin. The patent was based on "a pharmaceutical composition containing an extract of the plant Nigella sativa... for treated cancer, preventing the side effects of anticancer chemotherapy, and for increasing the immune functions in humans."
